THE BOOK: This 94 page, easy to read, understand, relate to and apply emotional intelligence book presents a model on how to get and keep yourself emotionally smart - particularly as you deal with unrelenting change and uncertainty in both your personal and professional life.

In it Dr. June Donaldson presents her view of the four major Cornerstones necessary in demonstrating our Emotional SMARTS®. She refers to these Cornerstones as the A, B, C, and D of being emotionally smart.

The "A" relates to having high Awareness Skills - being emotionally literate in what we say and do. The "B" addresses key skills in behaving appropriately in a wide variety of settings and with culturally and demographically different people. The "C" relates to connecting well with others and sending messages that we are likeable, trustworthy and capable. Last, the "D" relates to Decision Making and being able to make big picture, far reaching decisions that stand the test of time and scrutiny.

By design, the book is "de-acamademicasized" as it was written to be an easy to read, educational, encouraging and affordable book.

2. Emotional SMARTS® Program

The Emotional SMARTS® program consist of an online assessment and a debrief. The Self-Scoring Profiles were designed by Dr. June Donaldson, Certified Mediator & Arbitrator; Reverend Eric Haffenden, a registered psychologist and past president of the Alberta Psychological Association; and Mr. Grant Walker, President of Training and Development Materials of Canada, an individual with extensive experience in test, assessment and profile design and distribution. Their collective knowledge resulted in the creation of two credible, reliable and valid emotional intelligence self-scoring profiles (now online) and the related Emotional SMARTS® Facilitator Guide which is described below.

Dr. Donaldson's intent in creating the profiles and related Facilitator Guide was to design an educational, cost effective, confidential, easy to use and apply learning tool. Field testing of the profiles commenced in 1999.

The Emotional SMARTS® Self-Scoring Profile online assessment enables people to respond to statements and assess their proficiency in the four main Emotional SMARTS® Cornerstones of Awareness, Behavioural, Contact and Decision-Making. This form takes less than approximately 20 minutes to complete and results in respondents having a graphic display of their Emotional SMARTS® in the above areas. After the online assessment is complete, a debrief session is recommended.

The Emotional SMARTS® Debrief sessions enable people to assess at a deeper level their proficiency in the sixteen (16) skill sets that underpin the 4 main Cornerstones. A major focus and benefit of attending this session is that participants obtain more information of the skills where they shine and skills that might need their attention. This information provides them with direction on skill development they can undertake after the Emotional SMARTS® session. During this debrief session, participants also identify different behavioural styles and how their own behavioural style may help impact situations where Emotional SMARTS® is required
